COUNT DRACULA

COUNT DRACULA
SATURDAY 27th MARCH
A CPD WORKSHOP FOR ARTS THERAPISTS AND ARTS IN HEALTH WORKERS
In this workshop we will work with the story of Count Dracula using a variety of art making techniques including video and animation, sound, puppets, shadows, light projections, drawing and installation. Through making work in response to the narrative we will come to a more personal and poetic understanding of the tale beyond the cliches (though there is always room for fangs and bats!)and what we 'think' we know of the story. The emphasis of the workshop will be in experimentation with a variety of art making processes, collaboration and reflection on both what wisdom the story might hold for us in our personal and professional lives and also offer a glimpse of a way of working in a different way in a clinical setting.
The workshop will be led by Tony Gammidge an artist, art therapist and film maker with a number of years experience of leading CPD workshops.
£45 self funded, £100 employer funded, £40 trainee/unemployed.
CPD certificate provided, book early as strictly limited to 15 places. Send deposit of £15 to Tony Gammidge, 22 Compton Avenue, Brighton, BN1 3PN . If employer funded send your deposit which will then be reimbursed when funding comes through.

OEDIPUS 2008

NOTE THIS IS A FLYER FOR THE WORKSHOP IN 2008 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HERFORDSHIRE

OEDIPUS REX
(Reclaiming the myth)
A CPD workshop for Arts Therapists in which to explore and retell this story by Sophocles using digital animation and multi-media techniques.

Oedipus Rex, Sophocles’s most famous play and Greek tragedy is in terms of psychotherapy the source of Freud’s Oedipal Complex. In this workshop however the emphasis will be much more about responding to the actual story, exploring it and retelling it through video, animation and installation than in searching for and discussing theoretical meanings. In this way we will come to a different ‘understanding’ of the myth arrived at through a visual, poetic, physical, emotional and collaborative process.

We will make and use puppets (shadow, glove, plasticene), drawings/doodles, digital photos, sound, light and shadow projections and text to retell the story in video, animation, performance and installation using the extensive facilities of the University of Hertfordshire.

The workshop will aim to:

Look at the myth of Oedipus Rex and make work in response to the story using animation, installation and sound.

Explore the use and importance of stories and narrative in our work as Arts Therapists through the Oedipus myth.

Explore digital technology and multi media techniques (that are so given to working with narratives) that can potentially be used in Art Therapy.

No experience of working with digital technology or animation is necessary but it would be useful if you have read or know the story of Oedipus Rex. I recommend the Pasolini film of the same name.

Macbeth

Witches whispering deadly and nonsensical prophesies, murder and infanticide, walking forests, the screeching of owls (that mark murder), the ruthless desire for power and unremitting guilt. The visual and aural possibilities that this fantastic and dark play offer up are limitless. In this workshop we will use extracts of the story as a starting point to make work using various methods including stop-frame animation, puppets, shadows, sound, installation, masks, performance, hand-made books etc.
This will be the next workshop, date to be confirmed.

Callisto and Arcas February 14th

The video above is the work of the participants of the Metamorphoses Workshop on the 14th February in Brighton. The 2 groups made work collaboratively in response to the story of Callisto and Arcas which is (briefly) about a huntress who is raped by Jupiter and who when her pregnancy is discovered is as a punishment turned into a bear by Diana.

STORIES

We have always lived amidst stories whether they are told to us, we read them or we watch a performance of them.We have our own stories and we are intricately connected and part of other people's stories.
In the workshops we use stories as a starting point, something to respond to on a personal and poetic level. We are not trying to illustrate them or even retell them (though this might happen as a bonus) but more trying to get inside the story. We will use all sorts of types of stories from Ovid's Metamorphoses, Greek plays, fairy tales, myths, and more contemporary and perhaps even true stories.
In my own work I have made art using 'Who Killed Cock Robin?', 'Baba Yaga' and 'Little Red Riding Hood'.
